In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at how concrete and cement are destroying the planet. Specifically, I unpack why and how concrete and cement work, how concrete and cement create greenhouse gas emissions, how concrete causes climate change, and I also look at the possibility of green cement and concrete.
Concrete, through the chemical processes that occur during the production phase, produces a lot of carbon dioxide emissions. For this reason, the concrete industry is one of the largest contributors of greenhouse gases in the world. That also means, however, that concrete could prove a perfect solution to fighting climate change.
Green cement and concrete inventions are racking up. Some, like cement and concrete that could sequester and capture carbon leading the way to viable alternatives to conventional cement and concrete.
